Two more land in police net, hunt on for others
LUCKNOW, March 23 -- Two more accused were arrested in connection with an alleged online dating app-based extortion racket operating in Aliganj area. Four accused were arrested earlier, while a minor was also detained.
The arrests were made on Saturday (March 21) by a joint team of the SWAT/surveillance unit and Aliganj police, ADCP, north, Rishabh Runwal said.
According to police, the accused lured victims through a dating app, recorded objectionable videos and blackmailed them into transferring money via QR codes. The two arrested on Saturday were identified as Vansh Rastogi, 19, and Rishabh Rastogi, 21, both residents of Chinhat. They were apprehended near Sharma Dhaal Road in the early hours following a tip-off during a checking drive. Police recovered three mobile phones and Rs.390 in cash from their possession.
Police said the racket operated in a coordinated manner. One gang member would establish contact with a victim through a dating app and persuade them to meet at a private location. Soon after, other members would enter the room on some pretext, record videos of the victim and threaten to implicate them in a false case involving a minor.
"The accused would intimidate victims by threatening to circulate the videos on social media or file a police complaint. They would then force victims to transfer money through QR codes and also rob them of cash, mobile phones and other valuables," the ADCP said.
Investigators said the accused confessed to targeting multiple victims over the past few weeks.
Police said efforts were on to trace other absconding members....
