Two inmates escape from Kannaujjail during New Year celebration
KANPUR, Jan. 6 -- Two undertrials, one booked under the Arms Act and the other in a POCSO case, allegedly escaped from the district jail at Anaugi in Kannauj during belated New Year celebrations at the prison on Sunday night, officials said on Monday.
The escape of Ankit and Dimpy alias Shiva came to light during the routine morning headcount on Monday. Preliminary probe suggests that the two inmates tied blankets for a makeshift rope to scale the high wall of the jail under the cover of darkness.
Investigators believe the two inmates took advantage of the lax security to escape. District magistrate Ashutosh Mohan Agnihotri and superintendent of police Vinod Kumar visited the district jail following the incident and ordered an inquiry. The role of the jail administration has come under scrutiny, particularly over allegations of negligence and the decision to allow celebrations that may have compromised security.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the two tied together blankets to fashion a makeshift rope, which they used to scale the high perimeter wall of the jail and flee under the cover of darkness. The escape route became evident when blankets were found hanging from the boundary wall, exposing the breach.
Sources said that on Sunday night, the jail premises had a festive atmosphere as staff and officers marked the New Year. Surveillance reportedly weakened and sentry arrangements were allegedly lax.
Jail superintendent Bheem Sen Mukund was unavailable for comments. His phone was switched off. A Kannauj police statement said teams have been formed to trace the prisoners....
