Two held after 17-year-old girl gang raped in Hooghly: Cops
Kolkata, Jan. 11 -- A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by three people at an abandoned factory in West Bengal's Hooghly district, police said on Friday, adding that two of the accused, including a minor, has been apprehended in connection with the incident.
According to police, the incident took place on Thursday evening when the girl and the accused minor, who is also the victim's friend, were at their tuition class. As their teacher did not show up, the two went to a nearby abandoned factory in Hindmotor.
At the factory, two others allegedly filmed intimate moments between the girl and her friend. They then threatened the girl using the footage, following which one of them raped her, a police officer in the know said on condition of anonymity
The girl, upon reaching home, narrated the incident to her parents. Her father then lodged a complaint with the Uttarpara police station on Friday.
"We have registered a case of gangrape on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim's father. As the girl is a minor, sections under the Pocso Act have also been added," said a senior police officer aware of the development.
According to the senior officer, the prime accused and the minor's friend have so far been apprehended in connection with the incident. The three accused have been charged under section 70 (gangrape) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
"Two persons have been held. One of them is a minor. He will be produced before the juvenile justice board," the officer said. "Investigation is going on."
The prime accused in the case has been identified as Dipankar Adhikar (29), reportedly a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth leader. The ruling party in West Bengal, however, denied having any links with the accused.
"Anyone can claim anything. He may claim that he is a civic volunteer, but that doesn't make him one. Similarly, if he claims he is a TMC youth leader or worker, he is lying. Also, the law will take its own course. If anyone has committed any crime, the party will not shield the person. We demand strict punishment for what he has done," said Priyanka Adhikari, a TMC youth leader from Hooghly, said....
