AGRA, May 6 -- Work at the tehsil and sub-registrar offices in Agra came to a halt as lawyers and deed writers began a two-day strike on Monday. They were protesting the state government's plan to open front offices at sub-registrar and tehsil offices across the state under a PPP model. These offices are intended to assist visitors with work related to revenue and document registration. The protest also occurred in Aligarh, where lawyers and deed writers went on strike on April 22, claiming that the state government's plan to introduce private players will negatively impact their interests at sub-registrar and tehsil offices. Protests are being held at both district and tehsil levels. "We presented a memorandum on Saturday, but there was no proper response. Thus, we have decided to go on a two-day strike on Monday and Tuesday. A meeting will be called on Tuesday to decide further strategy, as we are not going to allow front offices to be opened at tehsil and sub registrar offices," stated Arvind Kumar Dubey, general secretary of Tehsil Bar Association in Agra.
