PRAYAGRAJ, Jan. 11 -- In a joint operation, the Phulpur police station team and the Special Operations Group (SOG) arrested two notorious criminals following an encounter early Saturday morning. The encounter took place near the canal under the high-tension power line at Boudai Mode while the police were conducting vehicle and suspect checks, police officials said. During the operation, the accused opened fire at the police team and attempted to flee. In retaliatory firing, one criminal was shot in the right leg and injured. He was later admitted to a hospital for treatment. The other accused was arrested while trying to escape, officials added. Deputy commissioner of police (Trans-Ganga) Kuldeep Singh Gunawat said that a complaint had been registered at Phulpur police station by Shani Soni, a resident of Jameelabad locality. According to the FIR, on the evening of January 7, Azam Rain of Jameelabad and Mohammad Suhail of Sarai Abdul Malik, along with two other accomplices, assaulted Soni and fired at him with the intention to kill. Acting on intelligence inputs, the police spotted two suspicious youths riding a motorcycle around 4:45 am on Saturday. When signaled to stop, the suspects fired at the police and tried to escape. In the ensuing encounter, Azam Rain, 23, was injured and arrested, while Mohammad Suhail, 20, was caught during the chase. The police team recovered a country-made pistol, two live cartridges, one empty shell, four country-made bombs, and a motorcycle from the accused.
