MEERUT, Dec. 19 -- Two suspected cattle smugglers were arrested with bullet injuries following a late-night police encounter in the Baradari police station area of Bareilly district on Wednesday, police said. The incident took place shortly after midnight behind Faik Enclave when a police patrol team on routine duty spotted suspicious individuals in the area. According to inspector Dhananjay Pandey, the suspects allegedly opened fire on police personnel when signalled to stop and attempted to flee. Police returned fire in self-defence, injuring two men in their legs.The injured accused have been identified as Rizwan alias Pinna, a resident of Sufi Tola, and Junaid, a resident of Sailani. Both were taken into custody and admitted to the district hospital for treatment. Inspector Pandey stated that upon discharge, both will be produced before the court for further legal proceedings.Police recovered animal slaughtering tools from their possession, along with two country-made pistols and live cartridges.
