VARANASI, Dec. 10 -- Two persons were arrested for committing frauds by downloading FIRs from the UPCOP app in Azamgarh on Tuesday, police said and added that two mobile phones, fake police identity cards, 4 fake Aadhaar cards and SIM cards were recovered from their possession. The accused, identified as Ankit Yadav, 24, a resident of district Tikamgarh (Madhya Pradesh), and Deendayal Yadav, 45, also of Tikamgarh, would use the information in the FIRs to contact people and offer help or threaten arrest. They would then send QRs to these people to extort money from them, said SSP Anil Kumar. A police officer said that Savita, a resident of Jhouwa, filed a complaint stating that an unknown person called her on her mobile from number 9203117942, identifying himself as constable Ranjit from Mehnagar Police Station, and said, "Your daughter has been found. We are going to pick her up, quickly send Rs.24,000/- via QR code." The complainant somehow arranged and sent Rs.22,000/- via QR code, after which the caller switched off the number and no information was received regarding the daughter. Based on that, a case was registered at Jahanaganj Police Station under Section 66D of the IT Act. On December 9, 2025, based on information received from surveillance and the cyber cell, station house officer, Jahanaganj, Atul Kumar Mishra and his team apprehended two suspicious persons from the eastern end of Azamgarh Railway Station at 02:10 AM and arrested them. The police officer claimed that the accused confessed during interrogation that they would download FIRs from the UPCOP mobile app to obtain the victim's name and address. They would obtain the victim's mobile number by getting the village head's number from Google and the Election Commission website. They would threaten the victim with help in the case or with arrest.
