TUG OF WAR OVER PROPOSED DISCOM PRIVATISATION
India, Dec. 31 -- While the issue of privatising two of the state's five power distribution companies or DISCOMs began in November 2024, it dominated 2025 as well. The proposed privatisation of the Agra and the Varanasi DISCOMs triggered sustained protests from power engineers and employees who adopted various forms of agitation to pressure the government into withdrawing its decision which, they claimed, was against their, and public's, interest. The government, however, defended the move, citing efficiency, financial viability and the improved consumer services as key reasons. The confrontation between power men and the UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) management continued throughout the year turning into a prolonged tug of war that remains unresolved as the New Year ushers in....
