Transit hostels to ease kids' academic journey
Lucknow, May 29 -- Transit hostels are being developed in Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Schools across six districts, in a step towards ensuring uninterrupted education for children from backward and Scheduled Caste categories. These hostels aim to provide students with safe and conducive residential facilities during their academic journey, a government spokesperson said.
To facilitate the completion of these hostels, the state government has sanctioned a total of Rs.866.56 lakh. This funding is earmarked for finalising hostel construction projects that were already underway, according to a press release. The districts set to benefit are Murtazanagar (Sitapur), Mohammadabad (Farrukhabad), Tirgaon (Barabanki), Ghorawal (Sonbhadra), and Vishambarpur (Gonda)-with Rs.851.98 lakh as the second instalment - and Gayaspur (Jaunpur) is also included. The chief minister has directed that the construction be expedited, and hostel operations begin at the earliest.
The UP State Construction and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (UPSCIDCO) is constructing these hostels under the supervision of the social welfare department.
Once operational, these transit hostels will provide residential facilities to students from Scheduled Castes and other disadvantaged communities, enabling them to pursue their education uninterrupted. By addressing both academic and living needs, these hostels will serve as a significant support system for students from economically and socially weaker backgrounds-promoting continuity in education, self-reliance, and empowerment.
To ensure transparency and timely completion, the implementing agency has been instructed to submit all necessary documentation, including memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and technical approvals, to the government.
Currently, 43 schools are affiliated to the CBSE, and 57 are affiliated to the Uttar Pradesh Board. Facilities such as smart classrooms, computer labs, digital learning materials, and well-equipped libraries have transformed these institutions into centers of academic excellence.
To support students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the government provides free education along with residential amenities, hostels, uniforms, textbooks, stationery, daily essentials, and meals. The enrolment structure ensures inclusivity, with 60% of the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, 25% for Other Backwards Classes, and 15% for the General Category.
Families with annual incomes up to Rs.46,080 in rural areas and Rs.56,460 in urban areas are eligible. Currently, 32,538 students are benefiting from this initiative. Since 2017, the number of operational Sarvodaya Schools has increased from 93 to 120, with 100 currently in operation-70 for boys and 30 for girls. Each school accommodates up to 490 students, benefiting thousands of learners across the state....
