PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 22 -- Preparations for Magh Mela 2025-26 are moving ahead, with officials nearing completion of the traffic diversion strategy and the identification of holding zones along key routes. Expecting a massive influx of devotees over 3 crore on Mauni Amavasya (January 18, 2026) the administration has also put together a unified traffic plan for surrounding districts and neighboring states to manage the heavy flow of vehicles. Additional director general of police Sanjeev Gupta and divisional commissioner Soumya Agarwal chaired a meeting at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) to outline an inter-district and interstate traffic management plan as part of preparations for the Magh Mela 2026. Only a three-day gap separates Makar Sankranti (January 15) and Mauni Amavasya (January 18) during Magh Mela 2026, so pilgrims arriving for Makar Sankranti are expected to stay on for Mauni Amavasya as well. In view of expected excessive crowds and vehicle pressure, two types of diversion plans will be implemented from the border districts. The divisional commissioner also directed for the preparation of duty charts for the diversion plan and the marking of holding areas on diversion roads. She stated that over three crore people were expected to bathe on Mauni Amavasya and in view of the same, a plan for high-risk traffic management and diversion was to be devised and implemented. Police commissioner Jogendra Kumar ordered border districts to prepare diversion plans and holding areas.
