Trade, staff unions oppose proposed power privatisation
LUCKNOW, Dec. 16 -- Electricity employees' unions, central trade unions and farmer organisations have jointly stepped up opposition to the proposed privatisation of the power sector and the Draft Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025, warning of nationwide protests and strike if the Centre and states do not roll back the moves.
At a national-level meeting in Delhi on December 14, leaders of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees & Engineers, the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha expressed serious concern over attempts to privatise power distribution, particularly in Uttar Pradesh's Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal discoms.
The meeting demanded withdrawal of the draft Bill, a halt to prepaid smart meters and scrapping of proposed amendments to nuclear energy laws. "The organisations announced nationwide demonstrations in January-February 2026 and a Delhi march on March 18, warning of sectoral strikes if privatisation plans continue," All-India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) chairman Shailendra Dubey said....
