Tracing 2 'linked' to KGMU doc's 'marriage' to Agra woman: Cops
LUCKNOW, Jan. 11 -- A day after the arrest of King George's Medical University (KGMU) resident doctor Rameezuddin Nayak alias Rameez Malik, the police on Saturday said they were tracing two individuals who witnessed the alleged marriage between Malik and an Agra-based woman.
Malik, 31, has been found guilty of physical and mental exploitation of a woman colleague on the pretext of marriage and forcing her to undergo religious conversion, in the findings of the university's Vishakha Committee report.
A resident of Pilibhit district with temporary addresses in Lucknow and Uttarakhand, Malik is also accused of coercing a woman from Agra into marriage and conversion.
Police identified the accused doctor's friend as Shariq Khan, who allegedly acted as a witness to the nikah, and the qazi as Saiyyad Zahid Hasan, who is suspected to have solemnised the nikah. Investigators claim that the nikah was conducted under pressure and coercion, without the Agra-based woman's consent.
According to police sources, call detail records, location data and statements recorded during interrogation of the arrested doctor pointed investigators to Pilibhit, where the alleged nikah is believed to have taken place.
Teams are now tracing both Shariq Khan and the qazi to establish their exact roles and whether they were aware of the alleged coercion and unlawful conversion.
DCP Vishwajeet Srivastava said the police are committed to ensuring a thorough probe. "All evidence is being meticulously collected so that there is no loophole in the investigation. We will strongly pursue a fast-track hearing to ensure timely justice to the victim," the DCP said. He further said it was also being verified whether the accused or his accomplices were involved in other similar offences.
