Jaipur, May 7 -- The tourism sector and allied associations on Tuesday opposed the state government's proposal to rename Mt Abu and also ban liquor and non veg to promote it as a religious pilgrimage site. They said that the move will leave thousands of people jobless and several affect the tourism in the state's only hill station that draws around 2.5 million tourists and Rs.100 crore in excise revenue. Mt Abu situated at a height of 1,220m attracts a large number of tourists each year and the local economy is mainly driven by tourism. Saurabh Gangadia, secretary of the Mt Abu Hotel Association, said: "A knee jerk reaction by the government will finish the tourism in Mt Abu. It will also affect the revenue and employment in the region. Around 2.4 to 2.5 million tourists visit Mt Abu each year. The excise revenue is around Rs.100 crore per year." Around two dozen trader associations, religious associations, civil society organisations met sub divisional officer Anshu Priya and submitted a letter on Monday in the name of the chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma raising their concerns over the proposed move. The SDM said that the proposal is pending at the state government level. Gangadia said the organisations will soon send a delegation to meet the CM and deputy CM Diya Kumari. The CM is expected to visit Mt Abu at the end of the month and a decision could be taken then. "We will also file a PIL in court, if the government does not heed our concerns," he said. Vikas Seth, president of the Nakki Lake Vyapar Sansthan, said: "The government is forcing this decision on us. The locals were not consulted about this. No one wants the renaming. If the name is changed to Abu Raj tirth then it has a religious connotation and that would entail many restrictions which will hit tourism." On April 25, the department of local self government department wrote a letter to the Mt Abu municipality seeking factual comments on the proposal to rename Mt Abu as "Aburaj Teerth" and prohibiting meat and liquor consumption in the open. The letter cited an Unofficial Note from the deputy director (statistics) dated April 15, asking for factual comments on the proposed change of name. The department made reference to a communication from the CM's office in 2024 regarding the change of name....
