Top businessman shot dead at posh Patna location
PATNA, July 6 -- In a sensational murder, one of the prominent industrialists of Bihar, Gopal Khemka, was shot dead by an unidentified scooty-borne assailant in the state capital late on Friday evening just as he reached his house. The incident took place at around 11.38 pm at South Gandhi Maidan, a posh locality surrounded by Patna police line, police station, residences of DM, district judge and rural SP.
Khemka, an influential figure in Bihar, was the owner of the Magadh Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in state, a number of pharmacies and factories. His residence was at Twin Tower, adjacent to the Panache Hotel.
Rattled by the incident, chief minister Nitish Kumar held a meeting on Saturday to review the law and order situation in the state. The meeting was attended by DGP Vinay Kumar and other senior police officers. The CM instructed officials concerned to complete the investigation into the killing of Khemka at the earliest, officials said.
"The CM emphasised that the rule of law is top priority for the NDA government, and warned of strict action against police personnel in case of negligence. He also instructed officials concerned to complete the investigation into the killing of Gopal Khemka at the earliest," a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office said later.
The DGP said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprising officials of the Special Task Force and sleuths of the district police, has been constituted to supervise the investigation into the killing.
Police said that the incident took place when Khemka, driving his car, returned home from the Bankipur Club, a distance of 1.4 km, and waited inside his car for guard to open the main gate. An assailant wearing a helmet arrived near Khemka's car and shot him from point blank range and fled from the spot. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital where the doctor declared him 'brought dead'. The scooty-borne assailant managed to flee, said police.
Seven years ago, Gopal's son, Gunjan Khemka, was also shot dead, on December 20, 2018 at the main gate of his factory in Hajipur (Vaishali) industrial area.
Police officials said that the son and father were murdered in similar pattern. "Gunjan was shot dead when he was still in the car immediately after he arrived at his factory, while his father was shot dead when he was waiting to enter his residential premises on his vehicle. Single assailant was involved in Gunjan's murder, and the same appears to be the case here," police officials added. After Gunjan's murder police headquarters provided him with two bodyguards but later withdrew for some unknown reason.
Police suspect that someone hired a contract killer to eliminate Khemka, who was the owner of the Magadh Hospital and was an influential person, though he maintained a low profile. He also owned several pharmacies, a petrol pump and several factories in Hajipur. "Police arrived at the spot more than two (1.33 am) hours after the incident, while city SP (Central) Diksha visited the spot around 2.30 am only after family members informed the police as well as Patna DM Thiyagrajan SM about the incident," alleged Suresh Chandra, a relative of Gopal, adding that the FSL team reached the spot Saturday morning.
City SP Diksha, however, said, "On the night of July 4, around 11 PM, we received information from the Gandhi Maidan South area that businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead. As soon as the information was received, the police reached the hospital and the crime scene. The police have recovered one bullet and a shell casing from the crime scene."
On the other hand, DGP Vinay Kumar refuted the claimed, stating that senior officers reached the crime scene around 12:40 am. After the shooting took place at 11.40 pm on Friday, his family members took him to a private hospital in Kankarbagh locality, which took almost 30-35 minutes. "It was the hospital authorities that alerted police. The possibility of an old enmity as the cause of killing can't be ruled out," said the DGP, adding police have obtained some crucial leads in the case.
On Saturday, Central range IG Jitendra Rana along with officials arrived at the scene to inspect the car as well as CCTV footage. He told reporters that Senior SP Kartikey K Sharma will probe the allegation against the police.
"The SIT will probe the case from two angles. One is to ascertain the reason behind the incident and the second is to find out who is the person behind the crime. Police have got some leads and are working on it," said the IG. Police officials familiar with the matter revealed that the probe could also be from the angle of business-cum-real state dispute and internal family tussle.
Later, a joint team of Patna police and district administration comprising Range IG Jitendra Rana and divisional commissioner Chandrasekhar Singh carried out raids at Beur central jail in connection with the Khemka murder. The jail is infamous for running crime syndicates. They recovered three cell phones from the jail which are said to have been used in the crime.
CCTV footage has surfaced showing the chilling murder of Gopal Khemka. The clip shows a man wearing a blue shirt and a black helmet waiting outside the Khemka's Kataruka Niwas's gate before a car arrived. In a few seconds, two cars arrived, waiting for the guard to open the iron gate. The first car was driven by Khemka himself, while the second car behind him was driven by another man. A woman was also sitting beside him.
Khemka was waiting, the accused hurried towards him, shot him in his car in the driver's seat, and fled the scene on his scooty. When the guard Ram Paras opened the gate, Khemka could be seen lying lifeless on the steering wheel. The man and the woman from the other car got out in a panicked state. The man in the second car behind Khemka's vehicle jumps out to see what happened and is seen making a phone call.
Ram Paras told reporters that Khemka usually returned home at around 11pm....
