Kolkata, June 29 -- Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and party legislator Madan Mitra sparked a controversy on Saturday after seemingly blaming the 24-year-old law student gangraped in south Kolkata, prompting the ruling party to immediately dissociate itself from its leaders' statements. "Security is there. But if a friend rapes a friend, how can you provide security? If the incident takes place inside a college campus, how the police be present there? Should the police be present inside an educational institute?...," Banerjee said on Friday. On Saturday, while speaking to the media, TMC MLA Madan Mitra said: "The incident would not have happened had the woman not gone there. Had she informed someone before going there or had asked two friends to accompany her...." This comes at a time when the ruling TMC is facing a backlash as the prime accused in the case, Monojit Mishra, was the former president of the TMC youth wing in the same college. The TMC on Saturday dissociated itself from the statements. "The remarks made by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra concerning the heinous crime at South Calcutta Law College were made in their personal capacities. The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever. Our stance remains resolute; we have zero tolerance for crimes against women and demand the strictest possible punishment for all those involved in this heinous crime," the party posted on X. TMC MP Mahua Moitra too said on X: "Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates @AITCofficial is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them." Banerjee, however, hit back saying: "I completely disagree with the post made by @AITCofficial on X. Are they indirectly supporting the leaders who are shielding these criminals... To truly understand the intent behind my words and statements, a certain level of moral and intellectual alignment is required - which, unfortunately, seems to be missing." BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also attacked TMC, saying: "After TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee, now MLA Madan Mitra has publicly exposed Mamata Banerjee's fakery... The truth is out: TMC is a party of predators and rapists..."...
