KANPUR, June 13 -- A three-year-old girl, who had been admitted to LLR hospital in Kanpur following a brutal sexual assault by a man in his 20s in Banda district last week, died on Wednesday night (June 11) after battling death for seven days. The girl was brought to the paediatric ICU of the hospital on June 5 in a critical condition. Despite continuous efforts by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, her condition did not improve. "She was on ventilator support from the first day. On Tuesday night, she slipped into a deep coma and passed away early Wednesday," said Prof Sanjay Kala, principal, GSVM medical college. He added that although there were occasional signs of organ activity, the child remained unresponsive throughout. Dr Shailendra Gautam, head of the paediatrics department, said infection and trauma to vital organs were severe. "There was no clinical improvement since admission. Her condition remained extremely fragile," he said. According to the police, the 24-year-old accused, a neighbour of the victim, lured the child to his home under the pretext of offering her a toffee on June 4. Once inside, he allegedly sexually assaulted her. After committing the horrific act, the accused reportedly stuffed the girl into a thermocol box and abandoned her in a forest, leaving her in critical condition. The victim's condition was so severe that she slipped into a coma. With the help of CCTV footage and other evidence, the police identified the accused and arrested him hours after the crime following an encounter in which he was injured....
