PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 7 -- Three suspected thieves were arrested by Fattanpur police after a shootout near the canal bridge in Chhapar village, Pratapgarh district, on Tuesday night. One of the suspects was shot in the leg during the exchange of fire and was later taken to hospital for treatment. Circle officer (Raniganj), Vinay Prabhakar Sahni, confirmed that the injured suspect was first taken to Gaura Community Health Centre (CHC) and later referred to the district medical college for further care. Police said the suspects were involved in several theft cases. Officers recovered a country-made .315 bore pistol, five stolen motorcycles, and a mobile phone from them. According to SHO Rajendra Tripathi of Fattanpur police station, the police were patrolling near the canal bridge when they saw three young men riding a motorcycle. When asked to stop, the suspects opened fire and tried to escape. Police fired back, injuring one of the men in the right leg. All three were arrested on the spot. The injured suspect was identified as Surendra Gupta alias Khunti, a resident of Sarayadali under Nagar Kotwali police station. The other two suspects are Hariom Pandey alias Sachin, from Fatanpur Bhojemau, and Ankit Gupta, from Kevrakala. Circle officer Sahni said that two stolen motorcycles were recovered immediately from the scene. Based on the suspects' statements, police later recovered three more stolen bikes.
