Three new sewage treatment plants to be set up in Prayagraj
PRAYAGRAJ, July 6 -- Three new sewage treatment plants (STPs) will be constructed in the Naini, Jhusi and Phaphamau areas of Prayagraj to improve wastewater management in the city's extended regions. These upcoming STPs will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology to effectively treat drain water before it is discharged into the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.
To facilitate the construction, the rural unit of Jal Nigam has initiated a survey in the city's extended areas to determine the required capacity for the new plants. Once operational, these STPs will collectively handle nearly three times the current sewage treatment capacity, significantly enhancing the city's ability to process wastewater.
Currently, the existing STPs in Prayagraj reduce the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) level in treated water to around 30 mg per litre.
The new plants aim to bring this down to 10 mg per litre, aligning with the latest directives issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which mandates STPs to achieve this level of purification.
"This improvement will play a crucial role in making the Ganga cleaner," said Surendra Parmar, project manager of Jal Nigam (Urban).
He noted that before the last Mahakumbh, one STP each had been established in Naini, Jhunsi, and Phaphamau. At present, Naini already has three operational STPs. With the new project, a fourth plant will be added in Naini, while Jhunsi and Phaphamau will each receive their second STP.
Parmar also stated that the new STPs are specifically intended to treat sewage generated in the newly developed and extended areas of the city. The ongoing survey will assess both current wastewater output and future demand to determine the appropriate capacity for each plant....
