Three months on, handcarts, kiosks choke Lko roads again
LUCKNOW, Nov. 11 -- Barely three months after pavements buried under makeshift shops in the state capital's busy roads in Lalbagh, Aminabad, Qaiserbagh, Chowk and Alambagh were cleared during the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC)'s anti-encroachment drive in August, the same stretches are once again packed with handcarts, kiosks and roadside vendors.
From Swasthya Bhawan Chauraha to Qaiserbagh bus station and from Alambagh station to Chander Nagar, the old chaos has returned, just as the city observes traffic month aiming to promote safe and smooth mobility.
A visit to several of these locations revealed a familiar picture as rickshaws were halting in the middle of a road. Near Aminabad Park and Nakkhas, rows of vendors selling clothes, vegetables and street food have reoccupied the cleared pavements, while in Lalbagh and Qaiserbagh, vehicles are again seen parked haphazardly.
During the August drive, the joint teams of LMC and police had removed hundreds of illegal stalls, seized five truckloads of goods and imposed fines.
DCP (traffic) Kamlesh Dixit said city police will soon restart its joint enforcement with the LMC. "The drive had shown results earlier and we will take it up again with regular checks to ensure public space remains free from encroachment," he said.
