MEERUT, May 5 -- A wedding procession turned into a scene of tragedy on Saturday night in Bareilly, when a speeding van ploughed into a group of children pulling a bandwagon, killing three of them and critically injuring another, said police. The incident occurred around 1:30am near Anandpur village in the Shahi police station area. According to eyewitnesses, the procession was travelling from Khidaypur to Anandpur village. As the revellers danced their way to the beats of a band near local resident Sompal Mistri's shop, four children were pushing the cart carrying the musical equipment. Additional superintendent of police Manush Pareek said, "Three people died in the accident on Saturday night. The bodies have been sent for autopsy. We are investigating the incident and efforts are on to trace the driver and the owner of the van." Eyewitness Krishan Pal reported that suddenly, a speeding van from the direction of Mirzapur lost control and rammed into the bandwagon. All four children pushing the cart were hit. One of them died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries en route to the hospital. The fourth child, who was severely injured, died during treatment. The deceased were identified as Rohit, 16, a resident of Bakenia, who died on the spot; Sachin, 16, and Mohit,14, who died before reaching the hospital. The fourth victim, Sanjeev, remains critical condition. Doctors treating him said he sustained serious injuries to his head, arms, and legs, and his condition is precarious. The accident caused chaos in the wedding procession, with bystanders rushing the injured children to a nearby hospital. However, the timely intervention could not save three young lives. Following the accident, the van driver fled the scene. Police from the Shahi station arrived at the spot and have since launched an investigation.
