Three 'illegal' tombs demolished in Ramnagar
Haldwani, Sept. 12 -- The Nainital district administration on Thursday demolished three illegally built tombs in different villages of Ramnagar area as part of its ongoing drive against encroachments on private and government land.
Ramnagar sub-divisional magistrate Pramod Kumar said the action was carried out jointly by the district administration, PWD and police in Lootabarh, Shivlalpur Riunia and Chorpani villages.
"The team had inspected the sites earlier and issued notices. Landowners later submitted written requests for their removal. When the tomb operators were asked to produce valid documents of possession, they failed to do so," the SDM said.
A joint team reached Chorpani in Nainital district on Thursday morning and razed the structure, followed by similar demolitions in Lootabarh and Shivlalpur Riunia.
According to officials aware of the matter, the landowners had also pressed for removal of the tombs that had been constructed illegally on their land without the requisite permissions. According to state government data, 552 illegally built tombs and other religious encroachments have been demolished across Uttarakhand so far this year.
In August, three more such tombs were demolished from inside resorts in Ramnagar, where they had been built and also from forest land....
