Third sexual harassment complaint at KGMU in 50 days, addl prof suspended
LUCKNOW, Feb. 13 -- An additional professor at King George's Medical University (KGMU) was suspended on Wednesday after a resident doctor from the department of paediatrics accused the senior faculty member of inappropriate behaviour, officials said on Thursday.
This is the third case of alleged sexual harassment at KGMU in the past 50 days.
University authorities have constituted a seven-member Vishakha committee (internal complaints committee) to conduct a fair investigation, officials said.
KGMU spokesperson Dr KK Singh on Thursday said immediate action was taken after the complaint surfaced.
"The accused additional professor has been suspended and barred from entering the department. The university administration is committed to ascertaining the truth. The guilty will not be spared under any circumstances," he said. The MD student submitted her complaint on February 11 after which the university constituted the Vishakha committee the same day. In its preliminary findings, the committee found substance in the allegations, following which the suspension order was issued.
The resident doctor has accused the additional professor of inappropriate behaviour and sending objectionable messages on her mobile phone. She approached the university administration along with her family members. Based on the complaint, vice chancellor Dr Sonia Nityanand directed the Vishakha Committee to record statements and initiate a detailed inquiry.
The committee recorded the victim's statement and questioned the accused faculty member. Following the initial report, the administration suspended the additional professor and attached him to the dean of medicine's office during the suspension period.
The latest complaint comes close on the heels of two other sexual harassment cases reported at the university.
On December 23, 2025, an MD pathology student lodged a complaint at the Chowk police station alleging that a senior resident doctor, identified as Rameezuddin Nayak alias Rameez Malik, had established physical relations with her on the pretext of marriage, forced her to undergo an abortion and pressured her for religious conversion. Police arrested him 18 days after the complaint.
In another incident, a nursing student accused an intern doctor Mohammad Adil of sexual harassment on December 29, 2025.
An FIR was registered the same day, and the accused was arrested on January 15, 2026, from a flat in the Qaiserbagh area....
