The flour tin heist mystery!
Agra, Nov. 5 -- The Hathras police cracked what initially appeared to be a high-value jewellery theft worth nearly Rs50 lakh - only to find that the "crime" had its roots in a household disagreement, and not in any criminal conspiracy.
In the end, the police not only recovered the jewellery but also managed to prevent a wedding in the family from falling apart.
The case was reported on October 24 by Akram, also known as Kalua, from Nai Basti under Hathras Gate police station.
He woke up to find that the jewellery kept hidden in a tin full of flour had disappeared. With his sister's wedding fixed for November 7, the shock was severe. A complaint was filed, and given the value of the ornaments, the police swung into action.
SP Hathras Chiranjeev Nath Sinha formed Special Operations Group teams and directed them to work through local intelligence rather than routine questioning.
As officers began tracing leads, a different picture started emerging at home. The ornaments were meant for the bride. But the bridegroom's side wasn't the problem - the tension was inside the house. Akram's wife, police found, was upset with how the jewellery was being allocated for the wedding and feared that once it went, it would never return.
Acting on that worry, she quietly took the ornaments to her parents' home in Mathura - without informing anyone.
The husband, unaware, assumed a burglary and rushed to the police.
"The jewellery has been recovered and returned to the family. The aim was to ensure the wedding takes place smoothly," SP Sinha said.
On the question of legal action, the SP said the law does provide for it, but the police were in no hurry to escalate what was essentially a domestic disagreement - one he described as the familiar nanad-bhabhi strain seen in many Indian homes.
With the jewellery back and tempers cooled, the wedding is set to go ahead just as planned....
