Termination of surgeon triggers doctors' agitation
Kanpur, April 17 -- Outpatient services at Banda government medical college came to a halt on Thursday after contractual and junior doctors staged a protest against the termination of an orthopaedic surgeon found guilty of negligence in a child's treatment.
Dr Vineet Singh, a contractual specialist at the college, was dismissed after a case was registered against him on the complaint of a girl's father, who alleged that medical negligence during her treatment had led to the amputation of her leg.
When news of the termination reached his colleagues on Thursday morning, contractual doctors and junior residents closed ranks in protest. They shut down the OPD and blocked the channel at the emergency gate, causing significant disruption to patients and their attendants who had come for treatment.
A heavy police contingent was deployed after reports of the demonstration reached authorities.
The atmosphere at the college turned tense following the administration's decision, with protesting doctors demanding a review of the action taken against Singh.
