Teen arrested for killing neighbour after alleged assault bid in Banda
Kanpur, Jan. 3 -- An 18-year-old woman was arrested and sent to judicial custody on Friday for allegedly killing a middle-aged neighbour who, she claimed, attempted to sexually assault her in a village of Banda district, police said.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon in a village under the Baberu police station area. The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Sukhraj Prajapati, a neighbour who frequently visited the woman's house. The woman told investigators that she used to address him as "uncle".
Station House Officer of Baberu, Rajendra Singh Rajawat, said Prajapati's body was recovered from the woman's house around 3.30 pm on Thursday. He had sustained fatal head injuries. While initial reports suggested the use of a farsa, police later clarified that the weapon used was a baanka, a heavy curved knife.
During interrogation, the woman stated that Prajapati entered her house and attempted to sexually assault her, following which she struck him with the baanka kept in the house in self-defence, leading to his death. Police also recovered several liquor pouches from outside the deceased's house.
Based on a complaint lodged by Prajapati's family, an FIR was registered, naming the woman, her mother and three other relatives. "The woman was arrested on Thursday night and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered. She was produced before a local court on Friday and remanded in judicial custody," the SHO said.
Police said investigations are ongoing to verify the claims made by both sides and to ascertain the role of the other family members named in the case....
