Team scouts PMAY camp sites for 27,000 displaced in Haldwani
Haldwani, March 16 -- A joint team from the state legal services authority, district administration and Haldwani Municipal Corporation on Sunday inspected Banbhulpura in Haldwani to identify sites for camps that will help over 27,000 railway land encroachers apply for homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, as directed by the Supreme Court.
The team pinpointed six locations for the camps to distribute and collect application forms under PMAY, officials said.
The Supreme Court in February directed the state government to aid rehabilitation of more than 27,000 occupants in Banbhulpura near Haldwani railway station by enabling PMAY applications. The occupants allegedly encroached on railway land, with eviction proceedings underway.
A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi declined to stay the eviction but recognised that thousands of families could be displaced. The court ordered verification of occupants' PMAY eligibility and a detailed status report before the next hearing.
Municipal commissioner Paritosh Verma said the apex court issued directions on February 24 in the Banbhulpura railway land encroachment case.
"The court directed that camps be organised from March 19 to inform residents about the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and other government welfare schemes. It also emphasised that the scheme should be widely publicised so that no eligible resident living in the encroached area is deprived of its benefits," Verma said.
Led by SLSA secretary Pradeep Mani Tripathi, the team-including municipal corporation and district officials-inspected the area and decided to hold awareness camps at the six sites, where residents will learn about the scheme and submit forms, Verma added.
The camps will operate at Haldwani Railway Station, Government Primary School Banbhulpura, Government Inter College Banbhulpura, Madrasa Nainital Public School Banbhulpura, Government Girls' Inter College Banbhulpura and Anjuman Islamia Girls' Junior High School in Kidwai Nagar. They will run from March 19 to March 31, 11am to 4pm. Teams from various government departments will distribute PMAY forms door-to-door in affected areas....
