VARANASI, July 22 -- Although the Ganga's water showed decline in Varanasi on Monday, the flood situation still prevails in several localities. According to the Central Water Commission, the Ganga was flowing in Varanasi at 69.69 metres on Monday, showing a decline from 70.12 metres reported on Sunday, the day decline began. According to the district administration, the flood has displaced 1,727 people from 360 families of the district. At least 1,011 people have taken shelter in the neighbourhood, and other safer locations, whereas 1076 people are living in 10 flood relief camps in the district. In addition, the flood has affected a total of 143 farmers in the district. There has been no let up in flood water that entered the populated areas of Salarpur, Saraiyan, Nakkhighat, Dhelvariya, Daniyalpur, Hukulganj and Badi Bazar of the urban localities. Due to reverse flow in Varuna, dozens of buildings along the river are now surrounded by flood water. As the ghats have submerged, the cremations are taking place at the rooftop in Manikarnika Ghat and in the lanes of Harishchandra Ghat. Meanwhile, district magistrate Satyendra Kumar inspected the flood affected area Hukulganj and flood relief camp set up at a public school. He also assessed the situation of the flood-affected area along the Varuna river from the roof of the house. The DM told the people of the flood affected area that if there is any kind of problem, they should immediately inform the administration, and help will be provided immediately. The District Magistrate talked to the flood victims and inquired about the arrangements. The DM said, "The municipal corporation officials have been asked to ensure proper sanitation in relief camps and surrounding areas, and to spray anti-larvae, conduct fogging and sprinkle lime in waterlogged areas." He directed SDM Sadar Amit Kumar to visit flood-affected areas by boat and speak to the people there to know their problems related to food, water, accommodation, mobile phone charging among others and extend them immediate relief. Food packets were being provided to the flood affected people. He directed the officials to communicate with the people of the flood-affected area and solve their problems on priority.
