Lucknow, Sept. 21 -- A speeding SUV ploughed into an e-rickshaw carrying devotees near Baniya Bazar in the Cantonment area here on Saturday evening, killing two people and critically injuring four others, the police said. Two others sustained minor injuries. The accident occurred around 7.30pm. According to police, the e-rickshaw was carrying eight passengers from Nigohan, who were on their way to the city for Khatu Shyam Darshan. Witnesses said the rashly driven SUV rammed into the e-rickshaw with such force that several passengers were flung onto the road. Locals alerted the police and an ambulance shifted the injured to Civil Hospital where doctors declared one passenger dead and another succumbed to injuries at the trauma centre. "One person Mohit, son of Ramsnehi, village Kurmi Kheda, police station Nigohan, was declared dead by the doctor. Other injured were referred to trauma where Umesh, son of Jagdish Sahu, resident of Nigohan, was declared dead during treatment. Other injured are being treated," read a police statement. Eyewitnesses told police that the SUV driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was zigzagging through traffic before the collision. After the accident, he abandoned the SUV and fled the spot. The vehicle has been seized. "The driver was reportedly intoxicated and speeding recklessly. He left the vehicle and escaped on foot. We are making all efforts to identify and apprehend him," said a senior police officer.
