Surgery gives girl with rare condition new lease of life
LUCKNOW, Jan. 14 -- Doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) have given a young girl a new lease of life, performing a complex operation.
The young girl had two uteruses and two vaginas. She had no control over her urination, and her anal passage was underdeveloped.
The doctors performed the operation in three stages, bringing new hope to the girl's life. The doctors claim that this is the first case of its kind in the state.
A 12-year-old girl, a native of Ballia district, had no control over her urination since birth. She wore diapers all the time, even at school. She also suffered from chronic constipation. These problems affected both her daily life and her self-confidence. Her family consulted several local doctors and sought treatment, but to no avail. The family then approached the RMLIMS.
Dr Ishwar Ram Dayal, head of the urology department, said that the tests revealed that the girl had three extremely rare congenital problems, which had never been recorded in a single child before.
An abnormality was found in the structure of her uterus; she had two uteruses and two vaginas. The urinary tracts were opening in the wrong place, and there was a congenital problem related to the anal passage.
Based on the test reports, it was decided to perform the operation in three stages. These three operations were scheduled to be performed over six months. First, the problem related to the anal passage was corrected through surgery to normalise bowel movements. Then, in the next stage, the necessary surgery was performed to restore control over urination.
After the intervention, the girl has gained complete control over her urination, and her bowel problems have also largely resolved....
