Support staff go but outside players stay in UP Ranji Trophy team
LUCKNOW, Oct. 11 -- Though it got rid of outstation support staff, appointing all home-grown people to handle the affairs of its senior team, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association failed to stop outstation cricketers, as this time too, it drafted at least three cricketers from Delhi, including skipper Karan Sharma, in the 17-member squad for the upcoming season.
Besides Sharma, two others like Abhishek Goswami and Madhav Kaushik too come from Delhi at the cost of many talented cricketers from Uttar Pradesh, who have migrated to other states after getting 'frustrated'.
The Praveen Kumar-led selection committee has once again drafted former Under-19 World Cupper and Lucknow-boy Zeeshan Ansari among six net bowlers, which included a few non-performers too. Last season, Ansari could not make it to the team despite finishing the highest wicket taker in UPTwenty20 League as the then coach reortedly 'didn't like him.'
Though UPCA's cricket development committee chief, Rakesh Mishra, advocates for 'no cricketers from outside' in Uttar Pradesh teams, he finds it hard to implement this policy strictly. "We are against cricketers from outside, but at the same time, we think that if somebody has migrated or stayed in Uttar Pradesh, they should first play two years of cricket in the state before knocking the doors for selection," he said.
UPCA secretary Arvind Srivastava too said that if cricketers from other states have already been playing for Uttar Pradesh for a long time, it is difficult for the state body to deny them a chance to play for the state. "What can we do when these outsiders are staying in Uttar Pradesh and have managed domiciles too?," he said.
Sources confirmed that one famous cricket academy being run by a cop on the Uttar Pradesh-Delhi border, has a major role in ensuring the entry of these outsiders into Uttar Pradesh teams. His son too has been part of the UP squad this time.
"This fact is known to everyone in state cricket, but I don't know why there is no check on this?" a senior UPCA functionary said on condition of anonymity on Friday.
He also feels that cricketers like Ansari, who even after being ignored by Praveen Kumar and Co in the last season, should be inducted in the side as an all-rounder as he has been a quality batter too. "UPCA ignored the boy for all three formats, but he was picked by the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 40 lakh for the last season. If he is that bad why was he picked by an IPL franchise," he added.
However, the combination of the team for the new season has been the hard work of UP's one of the most successful cricketers and coach Gyanendra Pandey, who had spotted these boys during a series of off-season camps this year before the final selection of 17 amongst a lot of 50 plus boys.
The new domestic season for the senior side will begin with a home match of Elite Group A in Ranji Trophy against Andhra, at the Kanpur's Green Park Stadium from October 15, and for the record, Uttar Pradesh have won the coveted trophy only once in 2004-05 here in Lucknow and since then they are struggling for their second trophy.
