Students support UGC equity rules, take out march at BHU
VARANASI/PRAYAGRAJ, Feb. 4 -- Students under the banner of the SC-ST OBC Unity Forum took out a march in support of the UGC Equity Regulations 2026 at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, demanding implementation of the equity rules.
The march started from the Vishwanath Temple on the BHU campus and reached MMV Chowk on the premises where a meeting was held. Addressing the gathering, speakers alleged caste-based discrimination faced by OBC, SC, ST, women, and disabled students in universities.
Shivam Sonkar, a student, said the equity regulations are extremely necessary to ensure equality, safety, and justice. "Therefore, we demand that these rules should be implemented without delay, he added." Thousands of students, researchers, teachers, and university employees were present at the event.
Meanwhile, a discussion organised on the UGC Equity Regulations 2026 at the lawns of the Allahabad University (AU) during the day turned violent after a heated altercation broke out between two student groups.
Members of Disha student organisation said the discussion was proceeding peacefully when around 30-40 individuals reached the venue and began abusing and assaulting students. Chandraprakash, a member of the organisation, alleged that several students were subjected to caste-based abuses and female students were harassed.
AU public relations officer Prof Jaya Kapoor said the clash occurred during an unauthorised programme. On receiving information, the university administration and police intervened and restored peace.
"One student was injured and received medical treatment. An inquiry is underway, and strict action will be taken against those found guilty," she added....
