Students protest at AU, issue 48-hour ultimatum

PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 29 -- Students and members of the Disha organisation staged a protest on the Allahabad University (AU) campus on Tuesday, against the alleged assault of a student, Chandra Prakash, by university security guards. Protesters demanded immediate action against the accused personnel and gave the university administration 48 hours to act.
The protest, which lasted for nearly three hours, began around noon at the Central Library gate, where a large number of students gathered, raising slogans against the university administration and security staff, disrupting movement on the campus for several hours.
The situation was brought under control around 3 pm after the intervention of the DSW, following which the students submitted a memorandum of demands to the authorities.
The students demanded that the accused guards be dismissed and legal action be taken against them. They also sought disciplinary action against proctorial board members for allegedly spreading misinformation about Chandra Prakash.
Meanwhile, the proctor dismissed allegations of assault by security staff, saying: "Chandra Prakash is not a regular student of the university. He failed his first semester in MA (Economics) and has repeatedly been involved in disruptive activities. Although he was earlier pardoned in the interest of students, he continues to create disturbances to attract media attention, and his parents have been called for a discussion."htc...
