Students' bodies demand LU registrar's resignation, FIR against her
LUCKNOW, March 1 -- Student organisations on Saturday demanded the immediate resignation of Lucknow University registrar Dr Bhavna Mishra and the registration of an FIR against her for alleged illegal administrative action and for allegedly sparking communal disharmony in the Lal Baradari row. They made the demand at a press conference held at the Press Club here.
"On February 22, the gates of Lal Baradari - 19th-century heritage structure used for decades by Muslim students, staff and teachers to offer namaz - were welded shut. Fencing was erected and a bulldozer was stationed at the site during the ongoing month of Ramzan. No written executive order was produced. No public notice was issued. No stakeholder consultation was conducted," alleged Mahendra Yadav, a student leader associated with Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha.
"Students argue that sealing a public structure used for namaz during Ramzan without lawful authority directly created communal tension on campus," he claimed.
The students also alleged that the administration has claimed that the structure's condition is 'not good' yet failed to produce any scientific structural inspection report or technical assessment. On the allegation, LU registrar Bhavana Mishra said, "We have an official report of an expert committee which in 2012 suggested to get the building restored, remove any modern plaster and plants which have grown in last many years."
"We noticed that several students were going inside the premises for making reels and videos which could have led to any mishap. This was the reason for banning the entry," she added. She also shared the 2012 report of the expert committee with Hindustan Times which states that as per the orders of superintendent archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India, Lucknow Circle, on November 28, 2012, Lal Baradari situated within the Lucknow University campus was inspected.
On Saturday, All India Students' Association (AISA)'s Shantam Nidhi claimed: "Rs 5 crore has been sanctioned under the PM-USHA scheme for preservation and maintenance of Lal Baradari, but no utilisation details have been disclosed." For 48 hours, students demanded the written executive order and inspection report. Instead of dialogue, police deployment followed and cases were filed against students, including Muslim and Dalit students who sought transparency.
Meanwhile, external communal mobilisation at the site was permitted, further escalating tensions. On February 26, a peaceful march to submit a memorandum addressed to the Governor was stopped midway by police. Samar of the AISA alleged, "The illegal sealing during Ramzan without written authority, followed by selective targeting of students, sparked communal disharmony. Accountability must begin with the registrar's resignation and an FIR against her."...
