Student's body found hanging a day after scoring 92%; family alleges academic pressure
KANPUR, April 18 -- A 16-year-old girl who scored 92 per cent in her CBSE Class X board examinations was found dead at her home in the Panki police station area of Kanpur on Thursday evening, a day after her results were declared.
Her family has alleged that persistent academic pressure from teachers at her school allegedly drove her to take the step.
The girl's body was found by her brother when he went to check on her after she failed to respond to repeated phone calls from their mother.
She was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room at their rented residence in Panki. Police from Panki police station arrived at the scene along with a forensic team, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
The family said the girl had been under considerable stress in the run-up to the results.
Her brother told police that some teachers at her school had been pressuring her, allegedly comparing her performance with his academic record.
She had been studying late into the night and, despite scoring 92 per cent, was reportedly unhappy with the result.
The family has faced difficult circumstances in recent years following the death of the girl's father. Her mother works at a mall to support the household.
Qasim Abidi, DCP (West), said the matter was being examined and that an FIR would be registered if the family submitted a formal complaint.
