Student gang-raped near medical college in Bengal
Kolkata, Oct. 12 -- A 23-year-old medical student was allegedly gang-raped by five men in a forested area near her college campus in West Bengal's Durgapur on Friday night, triggering protests by students who accused the institution of delayed action and a political row between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The second-year MBBS student at a private medical college, originally from Jaleshwar in Odisha, is currently admitted to hospital where she is receiving treatment and psychological counselling. Police registered an FIR under gang rape provisions but made no arrests till 5.30 pm Saturday, even as a few persons were detained for questioning. Her condition was said to be stable.
According to the victim's parents, she had stepped out with a friend to get food on Friday night when three men began following them. Her friend fled, leaving her alone. When she tried to run, the three men caught her and took her to a nearby forest, where two more men joined them.
"One of them committed the crime and snatched her mobile. She was threatened that she would be killed if she dared to shout," the victim's mother told reporters. The attackers also robbed her of Rs.5,000 she had with her phone.
The victim's father named the friend who had accompanied his daughter and some of his associates in his complaint.
An Asansol-Durgapur city police officer confirmed that an investigation was underway. "We have received a complaint from the victim's father. An FIR has been registered and sections pertaining to gang rape have been included. The victim's statements have been recorded. Our teams are already out," the officer said.
On Saturday, students staged protests inside the campus, accusing the college administration of inaction. The students alleged that despite the incident occurring near college premises, no immediate FIR was filed, no prompt public statement was issued and no emergency safety response was activated. "This negligence and inaction from the authorities amounts to betrayal of student trust and moral failure of the institution," a memorandum submitted to the principal said.
Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed concern over the incident, and sought Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee's intervention in taking "swift and exemplary action" against the accused.
The incident triggered a political slugfest, with BJP legislator and leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari speaking to the victim's father and assuring help. BJP workers, led by legislators, gheraoed the police station.
"...Women are not safe. The culprits are not getting exemplary punishments. The chief minister speaks on everything but is now silent," Adhikari said.
Responding to the allegations, state women and child development minister Shashi Panja said: "The chief minister doesn't compromise when there is some injustice against women. We have to wait for the investigation to be completed. BJP shouldn't try to take political advantage out of this. Crime against women in BJP-ruled states is also very unfortunate and should never be politicised."...
