AGRA, April 3 -- The Indian Army's premier field formation, Strike One, celebrated its 62nd Raising Day with traditional solemnity at Mathura Cantt on Wednesday. Lieutenant General V Hariharan, General Officer Commanding, Strike One, laid a wreath to honour soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. According to a press note issued by the Defence Office, Strike One was raised in Varanasi on April 1, 1965, under the command of Lieutenant General PO Dunn. Since its inception, the Corps has distinguished itself in the 1965 and 1971 operations. Its most notable engagement was the Battle of Basantar during the 1971 war, in which 53 enemy tanks were destroyed and large areas of enemy territory were captured. For acts of individual and collective gallantry in both wars, the units and formations of Strike One were awarded 13 Battle Honours, three Paramvir Chakras, 16 Mahavir Chakras and 46 Vir Chakras. Lieutenant General V Hariharan urged all ranks to rededicate themselves to the service of the nation and called upon them to train rigorously, remain prepared, and strive to deliver whenever Strike One is called upon. The General Officer Commanding also commended all ranks for their professionalism, camaraderie, esprit de corps, self-sacrifice, and dedication to duty.
