Strict compliance with jail manual ordered at Varanasi district jail
Varanasi, May 20 -- In a surprise inspection carried out on Monday at the Varanasi district jail, district magistrate Satyendra Kumar and additional police commissioner S Channappa directed the jail superintendent to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the jail manual. The officials issued a warning that any instance of negligence at any level would attract strict action against the responsible officer or employee.
The district magistrate also visited the prison barracks and interacted with prisoners to learn about their concerns. Some prisoners brought up issues, which the DM instructed the jail superintendent to resolve without delay. The inspection continued at the jail hospital, where the senior officials sought detailed information about available medical facilities and the stock of medicines from the medical staff present.
They also visited the jail kitchen to assess the quality of food being served to the inmates, followed by a visit to the lock-up office to review record-keeping practices.
Special attention was given to the women's and minors' barracks, where the DM interacted with the inmates and ensured them that they would not face any issues.
The control room was also inspected, with the officials reviewing the CCTV surveillance system in place for monitoring the premises.
Reiterating the importance of following rules and maintaining discipline, the DM and additional CP directed the jail superintendent to strengthen communication with inmates, listen to their grievances, and ensure that appropriate steps are taken for their redressal, including through legal aid if necessary.
