LUCKNOW, June 2 -- Government officials, forensic experts and medical officers from 75 Uttar Pradesh districts came together to strengthen medical management of victims of sexual violence in a state-level workshop organised jointly by the women and child development department, medical health and family welfare department, UNICEF and Enfold Trust on Saturday, according to press statement issued on Sunday. Principal secretary, medical health and family welfare, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma urged for a high degree of accuracy, sensitivity, moral courage and neutrality while examining a child victim of sexual abuse and documenting, reporting of medical evidence while highlighting the crucial role of doctors in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of medical evidence related to victims. He called for special sensitivity towards children with disability and special needs as both girls and boys are becoming victims of sexual violence. He called for wider dissemination of the resource materials and sessions on medical and forensic aspects of POCSO Act on the women and child development department's YouTube channel. Principal secretary, women and child development, Leena Johri stated that the department is committed to providing justice to every child who has suffered sexual abuse. She underlined the importance of multi-sectoral response, especially the coordination between the two departments to ensure effective implementation of the POCSO Act and other legal provisions for children. Johri said the department has empanelled 500 'support persons' in the state to support child survivors of sexual violence, as mandated by the rules of POCSO Act, and the directions of Supreme Court.
