KANPUR, Dec. 24 -- A stray dog was spotted carrying the mutilated body of a newborn with the umbilical cord still attached at a block campus in Chaubepur on Tuesday, prompting police to launch an investigation to identify those who abandoned the infant. The child was so badly mutilated that authorities could not immediately determine its gender. Locals who spotted the dog with the remains intervened and informed the Chaubepur police. Officers secured the area for forensic evidence collection and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The identity of the person who abandoned the infant is unknown. Investigators believe the child may have been discarded shortly after birth, possibly due to fear of social stigma. "We are looking into all possibilities, whether the infant was stillborn, murdered, or abandoned alive," said station house officer (SHO) Ashish Chaubey.
