Storm, rain claim two lives; uprooted trees disrupt supplies
PRAYAGRAJ, May 9 -- Two youths lost their lives in separate incidents caused by a thunderstorm and heavy rain that battered the city late Wednesday night.
According to reports, both fatalities occurred after trees were uprooted by strong winds, fatally injuring the victims. Police took the bodies into custody and sent them for postmortem.
Pradeep, 35, died near Rambagh old railway crossing in South Malaka under Kotwali police station area on Wednesday night. According to information, the deceased was an e-rickshaw driver and originally hailed from Farrukhabad. After having dinner late on Wednesday night, he was sleeping under a tree. Due to strong winds, the tree fell on the e-rickshaw in which he was sleeping, and he died on the spot.
In the second incident, a young man who had gone to attend a ceremony held 13 days after a death, organised at KP Jaiswal Inter College located near Baluaghat under Mutthiganj police station area, died after a tree fell on him.
Punit Yadav, 34, a resident of Malviya Nagar, was seriously injured when a tree fell on him due to strong winds. He was admitted to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital for treatment, where he died during treatment. Kotwal in-charge Deen Dayal Singh said that the bodies had been handed over to the family members of the deceased after postmortem.
Further, reports revealed, power supply was disrupted as strong winds led to uprooting of trees in the Tharwai area on Wednesday night. Eight electricity poles were dislodged due to uprooting of trees in the Tharwai area. Besides, a 100 KVA transformer also fell from the pole where it was set up. Power supply in the area was disrupted for nearly 18 hours. Traffic movement was also disrupted for several hours on the Tharwai-Bhidiura road.
The water supply was also disrupted due to storms and rain in the Jhunsi area of the city. As per reports, after hectic efforts by staff of the Electricity Department and Municipal Corporation, trees that had fallen on overhead power cables in the area were removed, after which power and water supply was resumed on Thursday afternoon.
Uprooting of trees also led to the damaging of cars parked outside houses in the area....
