State 'seeks withdrawal of charges' after a decade
GREATER NOIDA, Nov. 15 -- A decade after the Dadri lynching triggered national outrage, the Uttar Pradesh government has reportedly moved to withdraw murder charges against those accused of killing Mohammad Akhlaq in Bisada village in 2015.
Officials said a government letter recommending the withdrawal of charges has been issued, following which a request has been placed before the Surajpur fast-track court hearing the case.
Bhag Singh Bhati, additional district government counsel (ADGC), declined to comment on whether an application had been moved, saying the matter was "sensitive". He, however, confirmed that the next hearing in the case is listed for December 12, 2025.
Akhlaq family's counsel, Yusuf Saifi, said he had heard of the government's communication but had not yet seen the document.
"I will be able to comment only after going through the papers," he said.

The mob had allegedly recovered a bowl of meat from Akhlaq's fridge, forensic reports of which confirmed it belonged to a cow or its progeny.
On a complaint filed after the lynching by Akhlaq's wife Ikraman, Jarcha police registered an FIR naming 10 people and listing several others as unidentified.
Nineteen persons were named in the FIR for murder and assault, 18 of whom, including three juveniles, were arrested and one was let off due to lack of evidence. Police filed a 181-page charge sheet within 84 days. Of the 18 suspects, one died in judicial custody. The trial began in March 2021 after charges were framed against 14 adult suspects. The case has since remained at the evidence stage in the fast-track court....
