Stadiums will retain names: Govt amid row
Dehradun, May 22 -- After the Opposition Congress accused the BJP government of renaming sports stadiums previously named after Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and other prominent leaders, Uttarakhand sports minister Rekha Arya on Wednesday said that no stadium has been renamed and that the government has merely integrated existing sports facilities in four districts - Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Haldwani - under unified names.
Arya said, "No stadium has been renamed. The state government has only integrated sports infrastructure in the four districts and given them unified names."
"For instance, the Manoj Sarkar Stadium in Rudrapur will retain its name. Similarly, the multipurpose hall and the cycling velodrome there will continue to be known by their current names.
However, collectively, these facilities will now be referred to as the Shivalik Sports Complex," she said.
Arya added, "The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium and Maharana Pratap Sports College in Raipur, Dehradun, will also retain their names. But the entire Raipur campus, comprising multiple sports facilities, will now collectively be called the Rajat Jayanti Sports Complex."
She said the same principle applies to the Indira Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Gaulapar and the Vandana Katariya Hockey Stadium and other sports facilities in Roshanabad, Haridwar.
"All original names remain intact," Arya said, calling allegations of renaming "completely baseless."
The clarification came in response to Congress's criticism, which claimed the government was erasing the names of prominent personalities, including Congress leaders.
Congress social media wing chairperson Vikas Negi had termed the move an "insult" to the legacy of figures like Maharana Pratap, Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi.
"This is not just about names; it's about respect and identity. We will not remain silent," he added.
Negi said, "Will renaming provide coaching to athletes? Will it bring international-level facilities to these stadiums? Can we call ourselves empowered by erasing the memories of those who made sacrifices?"
He urged the state government to focus on "providing resources, recognition, and infrastructure to athletes," and to "stop politicizing sports."...
