SRNH doctors perform challenging heart procedure
Prayagraj, Oct. 7 -- Doctors from the Cardiac Department at Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital (SRNH) have successfully performed a highly challenging Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) device closure procedure. This minimally invasive procedure closes a hole in the wall between the heart's upper chambers by inserting a self-expanding device through a catheter placed in a blood vessel in the leg. The device, shaped like an umbrella or plug, is guided to the hole and deployed to seal it, avoiding the need for open-heart surgery. The procedure is usually done under sedation in a catheterisation lab, doctors explained.
This case was particularly complex because the patient's heart lacked the Superior Vena Cava (SVC) rim, which makes device closure very difficult and risky under normal conditions, they added. The procedure was led by experienced cardiologists Dr Vimal Nishad and Dr Vaibhav Srivastava, with crucial support from cardiac technicians Omveer and Yogesh. The entire procedure was carried out under the guidance of Dr Piyush Saxena, head of the Cardiology Department. Follow-up checks confirmed the device remained firmly in place, and the patient has returned to a normal, healthy life, said Dr Vimal Nishad and Dr Vaibhav Srivastava. They added, "Typically, such ASD cases require surgery. However, with the Cocoon ASD Device and the right technique, we successfully closed the defect without surgery, using only local anaesthesia."...
