Spotlight on obesity, fatty liver care
Lucknow, Oct. 27 -- The department of hepatology at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) organised the 25th annual conference on "Current Perspectives in Liver Diseases (CPLD-2025)" on Saturday and Sunday.
The conference featured lectures, debates, and panel discussions addressing recent developments in liver disease management. With non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) emerging as a major health concern, the first day was dedicated entirely to obesity and fatty liver disorders. Prof Dhiman emphasised lifestyle changes, regular exercise and avoiding junk food as ways to reduce the risks.
A panel on the status of NAFLD in Uttar Pradesh, joined by Dr Alka Sharma, in charge of the NAFLD programme under the NHM reviewed state-level efforts in training and disease burden estimation. Over 40 NHM physicians from nearby districts participated, reflecting the conference's growing role in supporting public health initiatives. The second day focused on alcohol-related liver disease, cirrhosis, and its complications. More than 400 delegates, including NHM and ESI physicians, as well as MD, DM, and DNB students, attended the event. Prof Amit Goel, Head of Hepatology at SGPGI, announced plans to launch a dedicated "Fatty Liver and Obesity Clinic" to better serve patients across UP.
The two-day event brought together leading experts in Hepatology and Gastroenterology from across India, including Professor R.K. Dhiman (SGPGI), Professor Anoop Saraya (ILBS, New Delhi), Professor Ajay Duseja (PGI Chandigarh), Professor Rakesh Agarwal (SGPGI), and Professor A.C. Anand (KIMS, Bhubaneswar).
To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, SGPGI organised a walkathon and cricket events on its campus on Sunday. The event was jointly hosted by the SGPGI Breast Health Programme and the Department of Endocrine and Breast Surgery to promote early detection and awareness about breast cancer - the most common cancer among women worldwide, affecting one in eight during their lifetime.
Prof R.K. Dhiman, Director of SGPGI, was present at the event as the chief patron, alongside Dr Praveena Dhiman, who captained one of the teams. Professor Gaurav Agarwal highlighted the importance of awareness, while Professor Anjali Mishra emphasised early screening and self-examination. htc...
