PRAYAGRAJ, Dec. 12 -- A speeding car lost control, hit a divider and then collided with a gas tanker near Berui village on the Delhi-Howrah National Highway on Thursday afternoon, causing a leakage of highly flammable propylene gas. The accident triggered panic in the area, prompting immediate response from NHAI officials, Tharwai police, and the fire brigade. The tanker, carrying 17,500 liters of propylene gas from Mathura to Odisha, had its valve damaged in the crash. Fire tenders sprayed water continuously for about two and a half hours to control the leak, during which both lanes of the highway were completely closed. Traffic was backed up for several kilometers. According to reports, the car driver fled the scene after the collision. NHAI Safety Managers Abhishek Yadav and Pradeep Yadav promptly alerted authorities. Fire brigade teams, led by CFO CM Sharma, managed the situation, while nearby villagers were cautioned via NHAI loudspeakers. Once the leak subsided, the damaged car was removed, and an iron plug was fitted into the tanker's valve, allowing it to be moved safely to the side of the ring road. Tharwai police SHO Santosh Kumar Pandey confirmed that the tanker valve is being repaired by experts before resuming its journey to Odisha.
