Speech impaired rape victim dies by suicide in Gzb; 2 held
Ghaziabad, Aug. 22 -- A 23-year-old hearing and speech-impaired Dalit woman, who was allegedly gang raped in Loni after stepping out of her house on August 18 evening, was found dead at her house early Thursday, police said, adding they have not recovered any suicide note. Later on Thursday, the police arrested two suspects for allegedly raping the woman following an exchange of fire.
The victim's family told police about her death at 6am, said officers, adding that they have added provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to the FIR. Police said that the body was sent for autopsy. "The autopsy report states that it was ante-mortem hanging, suggesting a suicide," said DCP (rural zone) Surendra Nath Tiwary.
Police said that the arrested suspects were identified as Rohit Kumar, 31, and Vir Singh, alias Bhola, 53, both residents of Nithora village. They were arrested near Nithora late Thursday evening and sustained a bullet injury to their legs after police opened retaliatory fire.
"The two men accepted their involvement in the gang rape of the 23-year-old woman. They were having drinks at a tubewell 250 metres away from the Nithora village. Seeing the woman walking alone on the isolated stretch, they asked her where she was going. When she did not reply, they pulled her to the tubewell area and gang-raped her. Then they let her go. The section for gang rape will be added now," said DCP Tiwary.
Police said that the two suspects are married and would often come to the isolated tubewell area to have drinks.
In the FIR, the victim's father said she was undergoing treatment at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Delhi, and could not properly speak and listen.
"After the assault, when she returned she told us that they were three men. Two were 'bhai' and one was 'uncle'. Earlier, she had undergone an operation for appendicitis and would often take a walk outside. On August 18 night, she again went out but lost her way. So she asked some men the way to Loni (her house). But they took her on a bike towards Nithora village. They assaulted her," the father added....
