VARANASI, Nov. 7 -- Samajwadi Party MP Virendra Singh on Thursday alleged that along with other SP leaders, he was stopped by police and administrative officials from visiting Dal Mandi to understand the pain of the people affected by Dal Mandi road widening project. The administration, however, called the allegation baseless saying that the MP was asked to postpone his visit in view of the VVIP movement in the city. The MP said that as they left his residence in Tagore Town to meet residents of Dal Mandi, police stopped him outside the campus of Tagore Colony and the area was cordoned off by the police.The MP said that he will go there after November 10. He told administrative officials that if any building was broken in Dal Mandi before November 10, he would launch a hunger strike. The MP claimed that the officers promised him to maintain the status quo until then. Additional district magistrate, city, Alok Verma, who arrived at the spot, said, "We didn't stop him. We requested him not to go to Dal Mandi in view of the VVIP visit. He accepted our request." 40 people submit property documents At least 40 people submitted property documents related to their buildings which have been identified for Dal Mandi road widening project in Varanasi, said executive engineer public works department (PWD) KK Singh. The documents were submitted at a PWD camp set up on the Chowk police station premises by November 3. In the meantime, the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) conducted a survey and found that basements of several buildings were being used commercially in the electronics and wholesale market, flouting safety standards. VDA secretary Ved Prakash Mishra said that a survey was also underway in Dal Mandi, and basements were being inspected regularly. Commercial use of basements is not permitted, and action will be ensured against those who violated norms. Action will also be taken against any illegal structures, he said. According to the plan, the 650-metre-long Dal Mandi Road will be widened to 17.5 metres at a cost of approximately Rs 221crore. This includes Rs 23.99crore for civil work (construction), Rs 194 crore for compensation, and Rs 3crore for utility shifting (shifting of electricity poles, sewer lines, drinking water pipelines, etc).
