SP, Cong question timing of debate
Lucknow, Dec. 23 -- Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav told the state assembly on Monday that the national song Vande Mataram should not be raised from communal angles. The song was sung by Rabindranath Tagore in the 1896 Congress session, which was held under the chairmanship of Congress leader Rehmatullah Sihani.
When the Constituent Assembly adopted the song, Muslim leaders like Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Maulana Hasrat Mohani welcomed the decision. The song united people during the freedom struggle and was not associated with any religion or community. The state government is organising it to divert public attention, Yadav said.
Congress legislature party leader Aradhana Mishra Mona said the party adopted Vande Mataram as the national song in its 1937 session. After independence, President Rajendra Prasad moved a proposal in the Constituent Assembly to adopt two stanzas of Vande Mataram as the national song. Ambedkar and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee were present in the meeting. She said that Jinnah had opposed the song but a senior BJP leader visited his grave to pay tribute.
