Solar fence set up between two orphan elephant calves after tussle in Rudrapur
Rudrapur, Nov. 14 -- Following repeated scuffles between two orphaned elephant calves housed at Sanjay Chetna Van on Nainital Road in Rudrapur, the forest department has set up a solar-powered fence to separate them for their safety, forest officials said.
The calves, named Raja and Rustom, had started engaging in power tussles that raised concern among caretakers.
According to officials, both calves are being reared in a temporary enclosure under the Tanda forest range of the Terai Central Forest Division.
"Initially, the calves shared a friendly bond, but over time, they began fighting and displaying dominant behaviour," said Roop Narayan Gautam, ranger of Tanda forest range.
"We feared they might injure each other, so a solar fence was installed to keep them apart while ensuring their safety," he said
Officials said Raja and Rustom were rescued from different forest areas earlier this year. On January 17, a three-month-old calf was found injured near Haripura reservoir under the Terai Central Forest Division.
The calf was treated by forest veterinarians and later named Raja.
A few months later, on April 2, another four-month-old calf was found abandoned in the Bannakhera range. Attempts to reunite the calf with its herd failed, after which forest personnel brought it to Sanjay Chetna Van and named it Rustom....
