Smuggler arrested with 7,440 bottles of illegal liquor in Sonbhadra
Varanasi, Dec. 27 -- Police in Sonbhadra arrested an inter-state smuggler and recovered 260 cartons containing 7,440 bottles (2,296.8 litres) of illegal English liquor being transported to Bihar via Jharkhand. The recovery was made during checking on the Kharapathar-Hathinala forest road under Hathinala police station area.
Additional superintendent of police, Sonbhadra, Anil Kumar, said the bottles were hidden among sacks of potatoes in a truck. The estimated value of the liquor is Rs.17 lakh, while the truck is valued at around Rs.20 lakh. Police also recovered one mobile phone and Rs.250 in cash.
The accused, Navjot Singh, told police that the liquor belonged to Dheeraj Singh. He said he had transported similar consignments to Bihar via Jharkhand before. Singh said he was paid Rs.30,000 per trip for safe delivery. Payments were made via Google Pay or at a diesel pump, and the truck did not have a FASTag. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS, and further action is underway. The excise department also joined the investigation....
